What is Mold?

Mold growth in mechanical closet after a pipe break

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention https://www.cdc.gov/mold/faqs.htm#indoor “Molds are fungi that can be found both indoors and outdoors. No one knows how many species of fungi exist, but estimates range from tens of thousands to perhaps three hundred thousand or more. Molds grow best in warm, damp, and humid conditions, and spread and reproduce by making spores. Mold spores can survive harsh environmental conditions, such as dry conditions, that do not support normal mold growth”.

Excess moisture in your home can lead to mold growth. A flood, broken pipe, or an exhaust fan that is improperly vented can cause excess moisture in your home. Removing or eliminating the source of the water is the first step in making your home healthy from mold.

The next step is to call in a Professional. SERVPRO of Farmington & Farmington Hills can safely remove mold in your home.

Cleaning up Mold in the Basement

5/2/2018 (Permalink)

Basements have the possibility of water seeping in from outside. Many homeowners use their unfinished basements for storage.  Basements provide some of the most ideal conditions for mold to form.  They are cool, damp, and dark. When ugly stains appear on the lower portion of a foundation wall it could be a sign of larger problems.

As seen in this before and after, dark black/gray stains are a sign of mold.  Mold typically thrives in damp, humid areas. If you suspect mold in your basement, the first step is to identify and correct the source of the water problem. If you have mold in an area in your basement that is larger than 10 square feet, you should not attempt to clean it up yourself. The best way to remove mold is to call SERVPRO to inspect the area and develop a plan of action to remove the mold safely.

What to Do:

What Not to Do:

  • Don’t touch or disturb the mold.
  • Don’t blow air across any surfaces with visible or suspected mold growth.
  • Don’t attempt to dry the area yourself.
  • Don’t spray bleach or other disinfectants on the mold.

Mold Clean up in Milford Michigan

Mold growth from a broken pipe in the kitchen

When a water loss occurs and not taken care of immediately mold can grow. The longer the water and moisture is present, the longer the mold has time to grow and become an issue.

A homeowner in Milford suffered damage from a water loss after a pipe broke under the kitchen sink. It was left too long, and mold began to grow beneath the wood flooring. Our technician met with homeowners to perform an assessment of the damage to the property. An industrial hygienist was hired to perform an indoor air quality test. The hygienist gave technicians a scope of work to be performed, including containment, air filtration, Hepa vacuuming and removal of the hardwood to get to the underlayment where the mold was present, mold removal and applying antimicrobial that will help prevent future mold growth. After remediation, the industrial hygienist performed a post test and the homeowners were able to move back into a safe and clean home.

Mold Removal vs Mold Remediation

Mold found in Apartment

What’s the Difference?

Since microscopic mold spores exist naturally almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors, removing all mold from a home or business is impossible. Many restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold. This is a fallacy. We understand mold and mold growth. SERVPRO of Farmington & Farmington Hills has the training and expertise to remediate the mold in your home or business.

Understanding Mold

When water intrudes into your property, mold growth can start in as little as 48 hours. Consider the following mold facts:

Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.

Mold spores are microscopic, float along in the air, and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.

Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.

Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.

Mold often produces a strong, musty odor, and that odor can lead you to possible mold problem areas.

Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

The Mold Remediation Process

Every mold damage scenario is different and requires a unique solution, but the general mold remediation process stays the same.

Mold Remediation

Many people call on SERVPRO everyday with a mold growth issue that they have no idea what to do with. Luckily, we are here to help and give you some insight on the types of mold you may be dealing with in your home or business.

Ordinary. Fungi and mold naturally occur in our environment. In fact, over 100,000 kinds of fungi have been identified. Fungi produce some very useful results such as: Yeast for baking, mushrooms for cooking, and penicillin for curing disease. Even though some forms of mold can add value to our lives, other forms can be harmful. Excessive amounts of mold, different types of mold, and exposure to mold may present health concerns for some people.

Unhealthy. Intrusion of water into your home or place of business can result in mold growth. When water intrusions are not addressed right away, the resulting damage can present increased risk of harmful mold growth. If the humidity and moisture levels in a water-damaged environment are not promptly returned to normal, mold spores may grow and multiply. Excessive mold growth can lead to indoor environmental conditions that pose a health threat.
